Ten Wishes: put citizens at heart of UK-EU reset

New petition calls on Andy Burnham and Ursula von der Leyen to agree ten practical changes for citizens at the UK-EU summit on 20 November

On 20 November, Prime Minister Andy Burnham and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen meet in Brussels for the second UK-EU summit.

The talks are expected to cover food and drink trade, energy and emissions trading, and a youth experience scheme. So far the reset has been about trade and security. New Europeans is asking both leaders to make it about people too.

Our new petition sets out Ten Wishes: practical, reciprocal changes that would make life easier for citizens on both sides of the Channel. They fall under four themes:

Protect acquired rights: let me stay, let me prove I belong, let me come home
Create new opportunities for all: more time in Europe, a simple short-term work route, recognition of qualifications
Reconnect young people: a youth scheme of at least two years with no ballot, Erasmus for 2028–34, and opportunity for apprentices and FE students too
Give citizens a voice: a UK-EU Citizens’ Assembly
“None of this reopens Brexit,” said Roger Casale, founder of New Europeans. “These are practical steps that protect the 7 million people covered by the Withdrawal Agreement and open new opportunities for everyone. After the referendum we called for a Green Card to protect citizens’ rights. The Ten Wishes are the next chapter.”

The signatures will be handed to both leaders before the summit.
