EU gets tough on illegal migration with new powers for Frontex border agency

The European Union’s border agency, Frontex, is getting major new powers, including the ability to deport migrants beyond EU borders.

The proposed overhaul comes after the humanitarian crisis in Ceuta this summer where at least 80,000 people entered from Morocco over the course of two days.

Since then EU leaders have been stepping up calls to accelerate deportations, with 19 leaders backing plans to establish ‘return hubs’ outside EU. As part of the overhaul, Frontex's $6.7M budget could be doubled, while it will also get new powers to monitor social media.

The move faces heavy criticism from human rights groups, who warn changes could put migrant rights and protections at risk. How is the block planning overhaul Frontex and does it risk becoming a European ICE?
