Dear Monsieur le Deputé, Madam la Deputée,
I am writing out of concern for the 5 million EU citizens in the UK and Britons in Europe whose lives have been in limbo for three and a half years due to Brexit.
The latest political developments in the UK have created a heightened sense of uncertainty and anxiety among these citizens.
As discussed at our meeting at the Maison de l'Europe in Paris in 22 October, it is also #the5million who have most to lose from a no deal Brexit.
We regret President Macron's reluctance to grant the UK a further three month extension unless certain conditions are met.
However, the stance your President is taking simply exacerbates the emotional and psychological distress faced by citizens.
By making his consent to a three month extension subject to the outcome of debates in the House of Commons, we also fear that President Macron will appear to be interfering with UK domestic politics. This may serve to further mobilise anti-European populist sentiment in the UK, which in turn can have very negative consequences for EU citizens.
We ask you to do everything you can to encourage President Macron to agree to a three month extension without further delay.
