Solidarity with Belarus

World Solidarity Day with Belarus is celebrated on September 20th and continues throughout the week.

The goal of World Solidarity Day is to support Belarusian aspirations for freedom and democracy, condemn violence against peaceful protesters and declare incumbent President Aleksandr Lukashenko illegitimate.

The idea of celebrating World Day was proposed by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Lukashenko's main competitor during the presidential elections in Belarus in August.

Tikhanovskaya declared that:

"For more than a month our resistance has continued after the falsified elections. We thank all Belarusians abroad and foreign citizens who support the Belarusian people. Any expression of solidarity for us is very important and appreciated".

On September 20th and all the following week, Belarusian diasporas around the world and people who support Belarus are invited to organize peaceful demonstrations, display white-red-white flags, write letters to Belarusian political prisoners and express their personal solidarity on the Internet.

Italians continue to share their solidarity with Belarusians through social media messages with the hashtag #italywithbelarus and through the numerous video messages that they are sending to the Belarusian Association in Italy.

Their support for the Belarusian people was expressed by members of Parliament Lia Quartapelle and Laura Boldrini, by Nichi Vendola, the National Secretary of  +Europe Benedetto della Vedova and other public figures.

Moreover  the Italian members  of the European Parliament, members of the Pd, FI, FdI and M5s, voted in favour of the resolution that does not recognize the results of the presidential elections of the 9th August. The Belarusian community in Italy expresses deep gratitude for this important gesture of support.

The Belarusian diaspora in Italy on Sunday 20th September will hold a solidarity demonstration in Bologna (17:00, Piazza del Nettuno), while in Milan and Rome the Belarusian communities will take solidarity walks dressed in the national colors of white and red.

The meeting in Milan in Piazza Duomo is at 15:00, the meeting in Rome at the Colosseum is at 16:00.
