The 1st of November marks the 25th anniversary of the coming into effect of the Maastricht Treaty which gave Europe not just the Euro but also the promise of a European democracy, a Europe of citizens, not just a single market and a union of states.
To honour this occasion, New Europeans is co-organising a commemoration in Maastricht on 1 November 2018 in the hall in the Provincial Government Building where the Treaty was signed.
The event is taking place in partnership with Maastricht University and the Limburg Province and will be attended by representatives from New Europeans, local and regional dignitaries as well as academic staff and students from Maastricht University.
The New Europeans Benelux branch is involved in the planning and we have members including student members attending from New Europeans branches in Brussels, Paris, Strasbourg, Italy and the UK.
The event will include a series of commemorative speeches including by Theo Bovens, Governor of the Province of Limburg, Professor Hildegard Schneider, Maastricht University and Roger Casale, Founder and CEO of New Europeans
New Europeans board member Maria Laura Franciosi, founding President of the Brussels Press Club will also speak. Maria Laura was in Maastricht in 1993 when the Treaty was signed covering the story for ANSA.
There will also be a public discussion and debate with young people from every member state of the EU (the Maastricht generation) and end with the signing of The Maastricht Manifesto.
The Maastricht Manifesto will appeal to all political and civil society actors, EU regions, cities and citizens to re-commit to the Maastricht promise of a Europe of citizens alongside a Europe of nation states.
