New Europeans is delighted to support a new ‘fringe’ festival of democracy to run alongside the EU’s Future of Europe Conference.
Taking inspiration from Edinburgh’s world-famous Fringe Festival, New Europeans has joined other civil society organisations in supporting #Europefuturefringe.
Bringing together events across Europe, not just in the EU, it’s hoped #Europefuturefringe will energise conversation and occupy the ‘spaces-in-between’ the formal conference consultations.
Roger Casale, General Secretary of New Europeans said :
“We’re delighted to be part of #Europefuturefringe. Civil society works with diverse groups of people from all over Europe (not just in the EU) so is best placed to contribute to discussions on Europe and how the EU should work for citizens.
“#Europefuturefringe will showcase the work of organisations and champion issues such as social fairness, equality, European values and democracy which are at the heart of Europe’s future.”
Supporters of the initiative so far include Volonteurope, New Europeans, European Future Forum, European Demcoracy Lab, Movimento Europeo Italiano, Stiftung Friedliche Revolution, Tyr and Sidon, Europa Union Frankfurt, ECIT Foundation, ARCI, GlobalNet21, and The Hungarian Europe Society.
Oonagh Aitken, President of Volonteurope, said:
“Like Edinburgh’s Fringe festival which has become the dominant and influential voice of the arts world, I believe we, as a united sector, should occupy the fringe of EU politics alongside the Future of Europe Conference.
“We have a unique opportunity as civil society to understand and crowd-source ideas about what needs to be done within Europe.
“We work on the frontline and see all the issues facing society, so we should play a major role in helping shape the future direction of Europe."
“Citizens will switch off very quickly if they think the Future of Europe Conference is all about politics and not about them. That’s why we need to kick start the conversation.”
