Friday 31st January 2020 was an historic day for the UK, as we left the EU at 11.00pm.

I was proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with friends from New Europeans, as part of their Courage Calls initiative to defend the citizens rights of the 5 million (EU citizens in the UK and Brits in the EU).

This work continues, because all our voices matter. We will continue to listen, speak up and champion citizens rights.

Like the 5 million, Emily Davison and her suffrage sisters were ignored, denied the right to vote and treated as second class citizens.

I believe we can learn from the courage, creativity and determination of the Ordinary, Brave and Extraordinary women, who never gave up the fight for equality and the right to vote.

"Whatever happens between Westminster and Brussels, it is the peoples of the UK and the EU 27 who matter: our friendship, family and all that we share in common."

These are the threads of a beautiful tapestry of Peace, which each of us can be part of and contribute to.

#Emilymatters joined New Europeans thoughtful initiative on Friday evening, to light a candle in solidarity with the 5 million, as part of a positive and peaceful Europe-wide grassroots initiative.

Brexit has created an incredible grassroots network and wonderful new friendships founded on shared values and an understanding that the EU is more than trade, it is at its heart, a Peace project.

Let’s continue to speak from the heart, to listen and to be kind, especially to those who have a different point of view.

The road ahead is long, with sometimes dispiriting setbacks, but the destination is worth it. The best is yet to come.

In the meantime, we continue to say loud and clear:

Don't Make Citizens Pay Price of Brexit!
