Speech to People's Vote Rally in Leeds by Joan LaPlana aka Roaring Nurse

Hello! My name is Joan!

I am what Theresa May called a ‘queue jumper’ and I am proud of it!

I came here from the continent nearly 19 years ago with just £50 in my pocket and a dream to become a nurse.

I have worked hard for our beloved NHS since.

Yet three years ago, we were sold a 350-million-pound promise. That Brexit would improve our NHS and make us better off.

Now, after three years of pain, broken promises and endless negotiations, we now know that we were sold a lie!!

A deception that will hurt the most vulnerable in our society.

A destructive No Deal Brexit will not enrich our NHS it will impoverish it.

And migrants. People like me, who came not to take from our NHS but to give our time, our expertise, our passion, our compassion. We are heartbroken.

As this government moves towards a destructive No Deal Brexit, Nurses are going elsewhere.

As talks of NHS trade deals with Trump’s America become a reality, Doctors are leaving droves.

We are in despair.

It feels as though our NHS is being dismantled one bed at a time.

And now those very same politicians who promised £350 million a week for our NHS now shamelessly claim that people really voted for an extreme form of Brexit or even a destructive No Deal.

It was never the “will of the people” to put jobs, livelihoods, the peace process in Northern Ireland, the integrity of the United Kingdom or our beloved NHS in jeopardy.

Nor did people vote for the destructive hard Brexit being talked up by politicians like Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage that will hit poorest communities first and worst.

There is no mandate in the country and no majority in Parliament for a hard Brexit!!

We can't let Hard Brexit destroy our NHS!

I do not want to leave in a society where people needs to choose between medicines and food!!

That was not on the side of the Bus!!

It is a democratic outrage!!

Which is why I am proud to be here today.

To declare ‘Let Us Be Heard!’

Let our NHS Be Heard!

And give us a People's Vote!
