New Europeans was lucky enough to join the Italian community in Clerkenwell for a festive lunch - complete with a Panatone, raffle and dancing - which was followed by our Brexit Info session organised with the COIMITES and delivered by Kay Foxall of Southwark Law Centre.

The Brexit info session was packed with over 70 members of the Italian community, many of whom have been living in the UK for over 40 years.

We saw delicate paper ID documents and heard stories about families who arrived after the war and began to build their lives in the ‘Italian triangle’ around Clerkenwell and Farringdon.

Many people in the community felt that they didn’t need to apply for Settled Status because they had been here so long.

It was very important therefore to explain to those present that they must still apply and to give them an information leaflet produced by the European Commission and our partners, Law Centres Network.

The community is fortunate to have a cadre of young people who will be able to provide digital assistance to the older members of the community when it comes to making the application.

We look forward to working with the members of the social centre again in 2019, to make sure that everyone in the community is clear about if, when, how they should apply for Settled Status.
