Statement on European Parliament committee proposal for humanitarian visas

Statement by New Europeans for immediate release, 7 December 2018

New Europeans welcomes the recommendation by the Civil Liberties Commitee of the European parliament  that EU countries issue humanitarian visas to persons seeking asylum.

Humanitarian visas would reduce refugees' death toll, LIBE Press Release, 03/12/18

Article 18 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights postulates that:

The right to asylum shall be guaranteed with due respect for the rules of the Geneva Convention of 28 July 1951 and the Protocol of 31 January 1967 relating to the status of refugees and in accordance with the Treaty establishing the European Community'.

For the right to asylum to be realised, persons seeking asylum must have safe and legal routes to protection . The alternative is dangerous, perilous journeys across the Medieterranean that have claimed lived of thousands this year alone.

At a time when displacement is at an all-time high, and other global powers are shirking their responsibilities, the European Union should steadfastly advance the protection of human rights.

Deeds, not just words, are requried.
