Each year since 2008, the European Parliament together with the ‘Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen’ have invited young people from all EU Member States to submit projects run by and for youth showing an active participation in the development of Europe.
One representative of each of the 28 national winners is invited to Aachen to attend several events, including the Youth Prize Award Ceremony, which always takes place two days before the day on which the prestigious International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen is awarded.
Model European Union Scotland was this year's winner of the UK section and Gary Paterson. Director General of MEU Scotland together with Nicoletta Primo and Rémi Carton from the organizing committee were in Aachen to receive the award.
As a partner organisaiton, New Europeans were guests at the ceremony. The event took place in the hugely impressive Coronation Hall next to the world famous Aachen cathedral and UNESCO world heritage site -
Speaking in Aachen, after the awards ceremony, Gary Paterson said:
"Our whole teams feels very proud to join inspirational projects across Europe at this legendary event and to talk about our efforts to promote political empowerment and exchange between Scotland and Europe."
The MEU Scotland team will be in Aachen for three days and will attend the award ceremony for the main Charlemagne Prize which takes place on Thursday. This year's winner is President Emmanuel Macron and New Europeans will live stream the speech from our New Europeans News FB page.
In the face of Britain's decision to leave the EU, the MEU Scotland team are going ahead with a second even later this year in Glasgow. New Europeans will be one of the partners.
Speaking in Aachen after the award ceremony, Roger Casale said:
